MONTHLY EVENTS
• First Sunday of each month, 9:00 p.m. St. Joseph Cathedral (212
E. Broad Street, Columbus) The first Sunday of the month, the men of the
Cathedral Choir chant the Office of Compline. The Office lasts about 30
minutes and consists of psalms, short passages from scripture, an office
hymn, a canticle (Nunc Dimittis), a responsory, collect and additional
prayers. In keeping with the earliest practices of the monastic communities,
Compline is offered when the work of the day is completed, and the
quietness of evening settles over the hearts and minds of those who have
come together in thankfulness for the blessings of the day which has passed
and in anticipation of God's gift of a new day.
• Second Sunday of each month, 8:30 p.m. beginning in October.
Trinity Lutheran Church (404 S. Third Street, Columbus) The second
Sunday of each month, Trinity Lutheran Church will offer a service of
Compline, prayer at the close of the day. The service will last about 30
minutes and will include prayers, psalmody, short readings from the scripture
and congregational responses. Opportunities to participate in the Trinity
Schola (an ensemble created to assist in leading worship) are available as
well. Contact Christopher Dent, Director of Music (614.224.6818 ext. 305 or
music@oldtrinity.com) for more information on the service or for
information on how to participate.
SPECIAL EVENTS
The Complete Organ Works of Dieterich Buxtehude
St. Joseph Cathedral (212 E. Broad Street, Columbus)
Organist and composer Dieterich Buxtehude (1637-1707) was the apex of the
North German Organ School and the most famous of J. S. Bach's teachers.
The larger organ works, the Praeludia, unfold like multi-faceted dramas,
exploring both intimate colors in contrast with grand sonorities. Buxtehude's
organ chorales offer the listener unique and elegantly ornamented solo
melodies. This great repertoire affords the widest possible opportunity to
explore nearly every sound within the Cathedral's monumental Paul Fritts &
Co. organ. We are pleased to welcome back Craig Cramer, Professor of
Organ at the University of Notre Dame, to play six recitals that will
encompass the whole of Buxtehude's works for organ.
